Course Description

Prerequisite: Ability to read both pitch and rhythm is prefered. The CPD Steel Band is a performing ensemble in which students will learn to play and perform on the steel pan. The steel pan, an instrument native to Trinidad, is the newest family of instruments on planet earth. This family of instruments includes bass pans, tenor bass, cello pans, double seconds and double tenors, tenor pans, and many other percussion instruments including drum set. This course is open to anyone willing to learn how to play these instruments. Although total beginners can join this course it is recommended that students signing up for this course already have the ability to read both pitch and rhythm. Not having basic music reading skills will require more outside of class preparation time for the student. For the spring 2018 course this class will prepare music for our spring concert with guest artist Victor Provost. The concert will be Tuesday May 1, 7:00pm in Slocomb Auditorium.
